Handcrafted felted wool cat cave: handmade, mulesing-free, one-of-a-kind piece

A handmade felted wool cat cave or house is nothing like a mass-produced bed. Behind every piece is carefully selected material, an ancient technique, and hours of work. Here is how our creations are made, why we chose non-mulesed wool, and what that means for your cat.

Designed in France, handmade by our artisan partners

Every MariGold model is designed and conceived in France. It is then shaped by hand by our artisan partners in Nepal, with whom we work over the long term, and then stored in France for quick shipping. Wool felting is a tradition passed down through generations in the Himalayan regions: we chose to rely on this expertise rather than industrial production.

Hand felting, step by step

  1. Choosing the wool: natural sheep's wool, 100% wool, with no synthetic fibers.
  2. Layering: the wool is arranged in thin, overlapping layers around a shape.
  3. Water and soap: the layers are dampened with hot soapy water.
  4. Friction: the artisan works the wool by hand for a long time until the fibers interlock irreversibly.
  5. Shaping and drying: the piece is shaped, opened, and then dried.

The result: a dense and solid felt, without seams, glue, or internal structure. The shape is held together by the material itself. It is a slow process, and that is what gives the walls their density. Since everything is handmade, each piece is unique: slight variations in shape or shade are the signature of craftsmanship, not a flaw.

Non-mulesed wool, guaranteed by our supplier

Mulesing is a practice used in some farms, particularly for merino sheep: strips of skin around the lamb's tail are removed to limit fly infestations. It is painful and often performed without anesthesia. Alternatives exist, and NGOs such as QUATRE PATTES campaign for its abolition.

The wool used for our caves, houses, and baskets is non-mulesed, guaranteed by our supplier. Providing your cat with a comfortable bed should not come at the expense of another animal.

What felted wool brings to your cat

  • Warmth: wool traps air and retains the heat produced by the cat.
  • A dry bed: it absorbs some moisture without feeling wet and remains breathable.
  • Calm: thick walls dampen noise.
  • A shape that lasts: dense felt does not sag like synthetic padding.
  • A familiar scent: the wool absorbs the cat's scent, allowing it to quickly make the shelter its own.

Handmade or industrial: what changes

  • Uniqueness: each piece is shaped individually.
  • Material: 100% sheep's wool, with no plastic or glue.
  • Longevity: an item that lasts for years, rather than a bed that needs replacing every season.
  • Fairness: work that pays artisans fairly over the long term, allowing them to earn a living from their expertise.
  • Aesthetics: a decorative object in its own right that blends into the living room. For ideas, read how to incorporate a cat cave into your home.

To be completely honest, the trade-off: a higher price than an industrial bed and maintenance by hand. To compare materials, read wool basket vs. classic basket.

Types of felted wool beds

  • Cave: a closed cocoon that reassures and protects, for discreet or chilly cats. See our caves and houses.
  • House: taller, with a wide entrance, like our Potir house.
  • Basket or bed: open, for cats who like to stretch out. See our guide to the felted wool cat basket.
  • Cushion or mat: to place on the floor, on a windowsill, or inside a cave. See our cushions and mats.

Caring for a handmade piece

  • Remove hair regularly with a lint roller or vacuum cleaner.
  • In case of a stain, blot with cold water and mild soap, without rubbing.
  • For a full wash: wash by hand in cold water without harsh detergents, then let dry in the open air while restoring the shape. Never tumble dry.
